CPU Architecture and Performance

Both processors from AMD’s EPYC 9004 series are built on the Zen 4 architecture, offering significant improvements over previous generations. The AMD EPYC 9654 with its 96 cores excels at handling high workloads efficiently. However, the AMD EPYC 9754 with its 128 cores takes the performance to another level, making it ideal for applications that require massive parallel processing power, such as deep learning models, data analytics, and large-scale simulations.

Despite the performance differences in core count, both processors benefit from AMD's Infinity Architecture and Infinity Guard technologies, which ensure superior communication between cores and provide advanced security features to protect critical data in enterprise environments.

Memory and Bandwidth Capabilities

One of the standout features of both the EPYC 9654 and EPYC 9754 processors is their support for DDR5 memory. DDR5 offers higher speeds and improved bandwidth, which is crucial for applications that require large amounts of memory throughput.

Both processors support up to 4800 MT/s memory speeds and come with 12 memory channels, which help to optimize memory access and reduce latency in complex, data-heavy workloads. The EPYC 9654 offers 460.8 GB/s memory bandwidth per socket, while the EPYC 9754 also delivers similar bandwidth, but with its higher core count, it can handle even more simultaneous threads and processes.

Power Consumption and Efficiency

Both processors are rated with a default TDP of 360W, which is typical for high-performance server processors. The configurable TDP (cTDP) ranges from 320W to 400W for both models, allowing users to adjust performance versus power consumption based on specific needs. While the AMD EPYC 9754 has more cores, it doesn’t significantly increase power consumption compared to the AMD EPYC 9654, showcasing AMD’s efficiency improvements in the Zen 4 architecture.

The energy efficiency of both processors makes them ideal for large-scale data centers, where power usage is a critical factor. The EPYC 9654 might be more power-efficient in less demanding scenarios, while the EPYC 9754 can handle even more substantial workloads without a proportional increase in power consumption.

Workload Affinity and Use Cases

Both processors excel in enterprise environments that require high throughput and low latency. The EPYC 9654 is a great choice for applications like enterprise resource management (ERM), supply chain management (SCM), and customer relationship management (CRM) systems, where reliability and efficient core usage are essential.

The EPYC 9754, with its increased core count, is better suited for more demanding workloads such as AI training, high-performance computing (HPC), media streaming, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), and web serving. Its ability to handle massive numbers of simultaneous threads makes it ideal for tasks that require extensive parallelization, like rendering and scientific simulations.

AMD EPYC 9654 vs. AMD EPYC 9754: A Detailed Comparison

The primary difference between the AMD EPYC 9654 and the AMD EPYC 9754 lies in the core count and clock speeds. The EPYC 9654 is equipped with 96 cores and a slightly higher boost clock of 3.7 GHz, while the EPYC 9754 offers 128 cores and a max boost clock of 3.1 GHz.
